Animal Crossing is no longer the best-selling game on the Nintendo eShop

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was recently knocked off its perch as the best-selling game on the Nintendo eShop.

After holding its position as top dog since it launched in March, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was finally usurped by the recently released Minecraft Dungeons, which is now the #1 best-selling game on the Nintendo eShop. This doesn’t come as much as a surprise given the global ubiquity of Minecraft as a franchise.

The news was widely shared on Twitter, where a variety of parties dissected the development of an almost three-month run on top finally being put to an end.

“Minecraft Dungeons has ended Animal Crossing’s Run as the best selling game on the US eShop,” wrote independent games industry analyst Benji-Sales. “Animal Crossing: New Horizons had been #1 since early March. That’s 3 months of dominance.”

“As we are seeing on Xbox, Minecraft Dungeons is performing very strong, and is now #1 on Switch.”

“There’s nothing wrong with a little nostalgia, but even by the time I’d faced down the Arch-Illager in his tower – no more than a handful of hours after starting – I was already sick of Redstone Golem mini-bosses, and Dungeons seemed to have exhausted its borrowed ideas,” wrote Jeremy Peel in his review.

“Like Diablo, this is a game designed for multiple playthroughs on increasing difficulties, but few players will feel compelled to return to a seam that’s all dried up after a single day’s exploration.” Having played it myself, I can’t help but agree.
