Netflix announces The Witcher: Blood Origin, a prequel series set 1,200 years before Geralt of Rivia

After the overwhelming success of Netflix’s Witcher series, the streaming giant has announced a new project set in the same universe – The Witcher: Blood Origin, set 1,200 years before Geralt of Rivia.

The news was originally shared on Twitter, where Netflix posted brief details about The Witcher: Blood Origin. Check out the tweet below.

“1,200 years before Geralt of Rivia, the worlds of monsters, men and elves merged into one, and the first Witcher came to be,” reads the tweet. “Announcing The Witcher: Blood Origin, a 6 part live-action The Witcher spin-off series from Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.”

For those who don’t know, Hissrich is the showrunner for Netflix’s The Witcher, and will be taking the helm of the prequel series, too.

Hissrich also took to Twitter to express her own thoughts on the upcoming Witcher spin-off.

“This has been the toughest secret to keep,” she wrote. “I’ve always wanted to dive deeper into the myth and lore of the Continent, and now fans will have a chance to explore it with Declan de Barra in a prequel series, THE WITCHER: BLOOD ORIGIN.”

“Elves, and enemies, and the end, oh my…”

One fan was quick to ask a question that was likely on every Witcher head’s mind – is Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski involved?

“Hell yes,” said Hissrich.

In related news, a pair of mods recently brought Netflix’s version of Yennefer and Triss to The Witcher 3. On top of the fact that The Witcher season 2 is on track for a 2021 release, Netflix is also working on a Witcher animated film called “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.” Apparently, it’s going to focus on Vesemir, Geralt’s teacher and father figure at Kaer Morhen.

Judging by the fact that The Witcher was so well received, and we’re getting prequels tied to both Vesemir and the first ever witcher, it’s not unreasonable to assume that a full-fledged televised Witcher universe could be on the cards.
